Please Click Here for a pdf or read on below... Guy Barnes has been writing and producing music for over 20 years. Guy was discovered in 1994, during the time when he was playing in bars and clubs around London, by legendary pro audio designer and engineer, John Oram. John recognised Guy's ability to write hooky top lines and lyrics and noticed a real conviction to his performance. So he decided to give the young songwriter an apprenticeship in engineering and production and the time to hone his craft. As Guy says: "I have always believed that a great song just happens, that's the mystery of song writing. If it takes longer than 10 minutes to have a real sense of where the song's going, then I don't write it." "I used to study all the storytellers, writers like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, Lennon and McCartney and writers like Burt Bacharach, Leiber and Stoller, Dianne Warren. Even as a singer I always knew that without a great song you are just an empty shell, so writing was more important to me than being a performing artist - to me it was the heart of everything I stood for." So, John set Guy up with a small studio where Guy subsequently spent long hours writing and recording and developing a better understanding of his craft. As his knowledge grew, so did his studio. Eventually Guy moved on to recording other acts in between his song writing to earn his bread and butter. In 2000 Guy discovered a girl band playing in a gentleman's club in Romford in Essex singing cover material. Recognising their raw ability to sing and harmonise, Guy invited them to his studio and began to develop and shape them by writing original material with a rockier edge and packaging them with the name "Beau-t". In 2001 the band caught the attention of ex George Michael management executive, Andros Georgiou, who loved Guy's idea for the band, as well as their music. Eventually the band was signed to Mercury Records in 2002.
Guy then went back into the studio and wrote two albums, back to back, for the band before the first single was ready for release. Then, to his dismay, the sub label the band were signed to was liquidated and the band were dropped, then promptly split. As Guy says: "That whole period was a real learning curve for me - seeing how the business side of the industry was run - though I was devastated when it all went wrong, I still came away with a resolve to do it all again and better.". Between 2003 and 2009, Guy spent his time writing and developing other bands and artists at his studio. He also continued to release his own material - the album "Suicide In Fractions" is still selling on iTunes and all the big digital distribution stores. Guy has co-writing partners in the country music scene and in 2009 started writing for Nashville. "I love the country music scene because the guys in that scene have a different way of writing than in any other style of music, and it's so story orientated and I love telling stories in my lyrics. I think with the advent of first Shania Twain bringing a hint of rock due to her collaboration with her husband Mutt Lange and then Taylor Swift more recently bringing more contemporary youthful pop to country music, the crossover has hit hard across the pond here in the UK and it goes both ways with bands like Bon Jovi embracing country music, but those guys have always had a certain country ethic being storyteller writers with blue collar ethics". Guy has written an extensive country catalogue, which caught the attention of writer, Roy John Fuller, in Nashville who started writing with Guy and also, Levi Riggs, who has taken four of Guy's songs and placed them on hold for his next album. In 2010 Guy wrote and demo'd an album for ex Simon Cowell artist from the platinum selling group Angelis, Natalie Chua. The single "Angel" - now number 15 in the Filipino charts - was written, produced, mixed and mastered by Guy. He even played every instrument except drums and bass which were performed by Gavin Smith and Brad Rice who Guy uses for everything. As Guy says: "Natalie comes from a classical background, but she's a rocker at heart, so I decided to write a crossover record that would compliment her vocal style, and in turn it didn't take long to write another 20 tracks along with Al Hutton my 2nd engineer which we then whittled down to the best 12, it's been a fun record to demo because it's a big classic rock record but with very radio friendly songs, I think the contradiction of having an 18 year old Filipino girl with a sweet voice with these huge songs would be different, and it really works". Guy will be starting full production on Natalie's album soon. Guy has always written songs with other artists but he has written the majority of his music with the man he calls "The Ying to his Yang", multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Alan Hutton. Guy and Al wrote "Suicide In Fractions" and Natalie Chua's forthcoming album together and always collaborate together on any projects Guy embarks on. As Guy says: "Al is my right hand man, without him I don't know if I could be the writer I am, certainly nowhere near as prolific. The guy [Al] has a real trademark style of writing that inspires me every time he comes up with a hook and there is a magic about how we work that I haven't found in anyone else and when one of us is dry of ideas, the other always comes through." 2010 also saw Guy working with another great singer and songwriter, Sarah Tyler, on an EP that quickly turned into a full album. Though only written right now, a fully mastered EP has been produced and "Someday" was made into a music promo see here.
In 2011, Guy was asked by Matt Myers and Dale Askew of leading hit publishing and production company "Audiofreaks" to start writing for them...so watch this space... "It is a fantastic opportunity to be part of this company. Finally I am writing briefs for top artists so fingers crossed it won't be long before i get a hit or two!".
